Buyer's Guide

How to Select the Right Restraint Strap

Choosing the correct strap type, length and bend is critical for both Building Regulations compliance and structural integrity. Here's what you need to know.

Step-by-Step Selection

1. Determine Load Direction
Is the force lateral (horizontal wind load pulling the roof sideways) or vertical (uplift trying to lift the roof off)? Choose Heavy Duty for lateral restraint and Light Duty for vertical restraint.
2. Measure Overall Length
The strap must span from the masonry wall across at least 3 timber members. Standard lengths from 300mm, available in 100mm increments. Light duty straps must be at least 900mm.
3. Choose Bend/Twist Dimension
The bend or twist is where the strap changes direction to go into the masonry. Standard options are 100mm or 150mm from the strap end. Choose based on wall construction and timber positioning.
4. Check Building Regulations
Approved Document A requires straps at no more than 2m centres. Always check with your Building Control officer for site-specific requirements.
